Job Introduction

The BBC’s world-class online products (iPlayer, News, Sport, Music, Radio, and many others) reach millions of audience members every week, and create around 1 Billion rows of data per day, but our work doesn’t stop there. We’re also working with other, “offline” parts of the BBC to help them gain an even better understanding of their audiences and aid their decision-making.

We're now seeking a Junior Data Scientist to come and work with our Marketing & Audiences team in Media City, Salford.

Main Responsibilities

The Data Science team are responsible for designing and developing data mining tools, modelling complex problems, discovering insights and identifying opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic and visualisation techniques.

Are you the right candidate?

We're seeking story tellers with the ability to present findings to multiple stakeholders that push and sometimes contradict common belief.

We hire people from a range of backgrounds and experience, but some key things we look out for include:

  • A degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills
  • The ability to come up with solutions to loosely defined business problems by leveraging pattern detection over potentially large datasets.
  • Programming skills (such as Hadoop MapReduce or other big data frameworks, Java), statistical modelling (like Python or R).
  • Experience using machine learning algorithms.
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques and proficiency in the use of statistical packages.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analytics, forecasting / predictive analytics, multivariate testing, and optimization algorithms.
  • Desire and ability to work with other quantitative and information disciplines to explore where Data Science and ML can complement existing work and help the BBC in the future.
