Due to business growth, we are seeking a new Head of Commercial for Scripted genres to join our award winning team. The role is responsible for ensuring BBC Studios successfully acquires the best and the most commercially attractive content from Scripted Producers, to deliver growth and revenue to the business. A distinct passion for Drama and Comedy programming is integral to this role, in addition to strong investment knowledge and exemplary stakeholder management. The role will report into the Director of Comedy and the Director of Independent Drama and will also have line management responsibility.

Main Responsibilities

Supporting genre heads in the management of the key stakeholders including Indies, BBC Studios production, broadcasters, agents, writers and talent. Support sourcing secure and acquire program rights at the correct market rate, building a world class slate and maximising the return on investment.

Act as an advocate for the genres both internally and externally, a source of expertise for the comedy and drama industry, promoting the services of BBC Studios as a first class producer and distributor.

Support the genre heads on the negotiation and delivery of complex co-production deals, co-commissions and other bespoke deals. Leading the analysis of consumer trends and broadcaster requirements data to inform new potential opportunities.

Directing the Comedy and Indie Drama teams to ensure all investments comply with BBC Studios financial processes and that all investment cases meet the required financial benchmarks, and acquire all available rights needed to support the various regional businesses on the best terms possible.

Prepare and present investment cases detailing key terms,  editorial content and detailed financial analysis, and when required present to the relevant investment boards at BBC Studios.

Insure that information on acquired programming is presented to the relevant trading divisions within BBC Studios in a timely and efficient manner, including instructing the legal and business affairs team to draw up contacts and oversee negotiations to conclusion.

Lead and manage the Comedy and Indie Drama teams (6) to evaluate programme proposals and support the negotiation of key deals where appropriate.

Co-ordinate with other genres ensuring consistency in approach and deal terms where IP suppliers deliver to multiple genres.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Extensive experience working in the scripted genres, with proven success having developed credible gravitas within the media industry, leading to a broad network of relationships with key producers in the industry.
  • Demonstrable collaboration with producers and a demonstrable understanding of their needs and motivations.
  • Accomplished negotiation skills, leveraged with extensive market knowledge.
  • Demonstrable investment in leadership, focused on empathy, transparency and understanding in leading a team
  • Effective communicator, able to engage with all levels
  • Possess an analytical mindset, able to understand and challenge complex information and present in an engaging manner.
  • Develop real partnerships with colleagues; able to work with and influence teams globally.
